April Home Maintenance: Roof & Exterior Check After Winter

Winter is hard on a home.

Snow loads, ice dams, freeze-thaw cycles, wind — even if nothing dramatic happened, your roof and exterior have taken a beating. April is the right time to step back and do a careful inspection before spring storms roll in.

You’re not looking for perfection. You’re looking for small problems before they become big ones.

1. Start With the Roof (From the Ground)

You don’t need to climb up there. In fact, don’t.

Walk around your home and look up. Use binoculars if needed.

Watch for:

  • Missing or curling shingles

  • Dark patches or uneven areas

  • Debris buildup in valleys

  • Damaged flashing around chimneys or vents

  • Shingles in the yard (a sign of wind damage)

If your roof is 15+ years old, this annual check becomes even more important.

Even one missing shingle can allow water intrusion during heavy spring rain.

2. Check for Ice Dam Damage

After a snowy winter, ice dams are common. Even if you didn’t notice one forming, they can leave behind damage.

Inside your home, look for:

  • Water stains on ceilings

  • Peeling paint near roof lines

  • Damp insulation in the attic

Outside, inspect gutters and roof edges for loosened sections.

Ice dams don’t always cause immediate visible damage — sometimes issues show up months later.

3. Inspect Siding & Trim

Freeze-thaw cycles can cause expansion and contraction in siding materials.

Look for:

  • Cracked or loose siding panels

  • Gaps around windows and doors

  • Peeling caulk

  • Wood rot on trim

Water intrusion around windows is a common and expensive long-term issue — catching it early matters.

4. Walk the Perimeter

As the ground softens in spring, take a slow walk around your foundation.

Look for:

  • New cracks

  • Loose steps or railings

  • Settling soil near the foundation

  • Areas where mulch or landscaping touches siding (this can trap moisture)

This is also a good time to check exterior faucets and hose bibs for leaks after winter.

Why April Matters

Small exterior repairs are manageable. Structural repairs are not.

Spring storms are coming. Heavy rain and wind will test anything winter weakened.

A simple April inspection gives you time to schedule small fixes before they turn into emergency calls.

Home maintenance isn’t about reacting — it’s about staying a step ahead.

If you ever want a second set of eyes on your home or have questions about long-term planning, I’m here. Sometimes a short conversation now prevents a bigger one later.
